Essential oils are not safe to consume and can cause significant poisoning even if small amounts are ingested.
The use of undiluted essential oils on sensitive skin or in the nostrils can irritate or burn. Susceptible people may also develop an allergic reaction and a skin rash.
Essential oils are extremely concentrated substances extracted from various parts of plants.
Because they naturally occur in plants many people mistakenly assume they are safe and non-toxic.
Some essentials oils are in fact toxic and can have serious reactions on the skin, liver and respiratory system.
It is important they be treated with respect and care is taken at all times when using.
Cats, Dogs and Essential Oils
Many essential oils are toxic to cats and dogs, whilst you may not have used them directly on your pet they can be absorbed through their fur and lungs. (ie; vaporiser mist particles landing on their coats also by the pet owner stoking their pet after handling the oils). If oils end up on the animals fur they are then ingested when the animal grooms itself.
Anise, citrus, cinnamon, clove, eucalyptus, juniper, lavender, pennyroyal, peppermint, pine, tea tree, thyme, wintergreen, ylang ylang are examples of those considered to be toxic to cats & dogs.
